Under a Dark Cloud

Under a Dark Cloud is a grippingly emotional story of shattered dreams and haunting nightmares from painful memories,  focussing on the lives of two women battling to come out from under the dark cloud that shrouds their soul.

Kelly Henderson arrives back in Bunreen, a small town nestled in the South East of Ireland, after a fifteen-year absence, wanting to re-establish a relationship with her sister Niamh and mother Lorraine. However, Lorraine is suspicious of Kelly’s intentions and questions why come home now, only weeks after the untimely death of her husband.

Her grief is raw, her heart heavy but Kelly is not deterred by Lorraine’s indifference towards her and remains in Ireland taking up a job in the local hospital, her decision to stay having been swayed by her neighbour, Roz O’Reilly being delighted by Kelly’s return, after all she had been more of a mother to Kelly than Lorraine had when growing up.

All Kelly wants is for Lorraine to admit she was wrong to banish her from home when she was only fifteen years old and acknowledge the pain Kelly suffered, but it looks like Kelly won’t get the closure she is looking for, or will she?

Is there more to her return than she is letting on? What is Kelly running from and why is she so desperate to settle ghosts from the past, especially the ones that drove her away in the first place?

Nessa Quinlan has a simple but happy life with her devoted husband Liam; however, her life is turned upside-down when her estranged brother contacts her to say he is dying. Nessa had broken all ties with Donald after he had killed Roz O’Reilly’s youngest daughter in a road accident for which he was at fault and showed no remorse.

Kind-hearted, Nessa becomes his carer which concerns her family and best friend Clodagh, but Nessa has more to contend with than the disagreeable Donald, as she is not sleeping due to ghosts from her past threatening to cloud her happiness which in turn puts a strain on her marriage. This is not helped by Donald refusing medical treatment until one day Kelly arrives on their doorstep as his new Health Nurse.

Bunreen being a small town, paths are bound to cross, but for some reason Kelly fails to inform Nessa she is originally from the area and of her connection to the O’Reilly’s.

Can Nessa save her marriage and should she trust Kelly?

A heart wrenching and gripping page turner

Format: Paperback
A powerful story full of every emotion you can think of. After reading Mary’s first novel A Sweet Smell of Strawberries, I could not wait to get my hands on this new novel and to say I was not disappointed is an understatement. Once again set in Ireland this story pulled you in to the characters, Kelly returns to Ireland looking for her mother to basically acknowledge her, but soon finds herself caught up in an impossible situation of split loyalties, however I did not expect things to turn out the way they did. Highly recommend this read.
